 The History of WDCR Minimize

WDCR AM 1340 - Celebrating 50 Years!

Dartmouth Broadcasting began in the 1920's with the ambitions of a few Dartmouth College students that decided to give a new technology called 'radio' a try. The first broadcast occurred over copper wires linked in all the dorms. The station used the call letters WDBS [Dartmouth Broadcasting System].

The name changed to WDCR [Dartmouth College Radio] when it became an officially licensed station of the Federal Communications Commission and its first official broadcast at 1340 AM was March 4th, 1958.
Over the years, WDCR has broadcast a wide variety of music, news, and sports.  At different times, WDCR has been primarily a talk, Top 40, or alternative rock station.

Currently, WDCR is a multi-faceted station that features a classic rock format during the day while a wide variety of student shows take over every evening.  In addition, WDCR features broadcasts of baseball, men's basketball, and women's hockey.  It is also home to the Dartmouth Election Network.

On March 4, 2008, WDCR will celebrate 50 years of radio in the Upper Valley.  Visit our 50th Anniversary page for the latest information on the celebration.

WDCR – About Dartmouth College Radio Minimize

WDCR AM 1340 is the Official Dartmouth College Radio Station, locally owned and operated by the Trustees of Dartmouth College. WDCR is a student run activity on the campus of Dartmouth College.

WDCR is also the home of the Dartmouth Sports Network, Dartmouth Broadcast News, and the Dartmouth Election Network.

Dartmouth Broadcasting operates as the umbrella organization that runs Dartmouth's two radio stations, WDCR (AM 1340) and WFRD (99 Rock). We are COMPLETELY RUN BY STUDENTS under our Operations Manager. All management positions are filled by students and all the important decisions affecting Dartmouth Broadcasting are decided by the Student Directorate, which is comprised of the heads of all departments including the Operations Manager under Dartmouth Broadcasting.

Dartmouth Broadcasting is a real business with all aspects managed and operated by students under the Company Operations Manager. It is one of the few "real world" experiences Dartmouth College has to offer, and it is first and foremost a place to learn. It is an educational experience unlike any other available here at Dartmouth College.

Dartmouth Broadcasting is financially self-sufficient and receives no funds from the college to operate. The money for our nearly half-million dollar operating budget comes solely from local and national clients and investors.
